Every level of power, so little for the common man. Why haven't we put it together the last half a century? I'll award best answer.

America has reached a standard of living where its not difficult to have shelter and a full belly.
Hence, people have become satisfied.
Americans do not vote anyway (OK, the Obama election was a exception). So lawyers and politicians get to do what ever they want. No one knows and no one cares.
