Despite the delusions of grandeur some physicians experience, they are still quite human, and humans make mistakes.

this is in case something happens, even on accident, while the physician is taking care of the patient. if they are sued because of it, the insurance will help to make sure that the physician will not lose everything, including his/her license

Idealy, the answer SHOULD be that they compensate victims of their mistakes. (they are only human)

Realistically, what DOES happen, is that this PROTECTION money protects some doctors from ANY compensation to its victims. The 'FUND' makes the mistakes UNTOUCHABLES as you now have a CORPORATION, that lives forever defend a person with LIMITED RESOURCES and LIFESPAN.

There is a movie, THE RAINMAN, that captures some of the corruption of the system.

When there is money involved THE TRUTH is often betrayed.
